The Gregarios Superclub Ciclista

The new generation of Italian cycling

Introducing Diego Ulissi

Diego Ulissi is the second rider ever to achieve two successive World Junior Road titles in 2006 and 2007. After graduating from the under 23’s he’s just completed his first pro season with Lampre-Farnese Vini.

On 19th September 2010 Diego nabbed his first pro win at the Gran Premio Industria e Commercio di Prato in Tuscany. He won from a 12 man break, which went clear at 20 km and held off the peloton even over the big climb of the day. Michele Scarponi attacked from the breakaway, Diego went with him and edged him out of the top podium place at the sprint finish - simple as! Watch out - he’s on his way!

This race has been running since 1945, previous winners and podium places include:-

Ferdi Kubler, Ercole Baldini, Miguel Poblet (3rd), Felice Gimondi (2nd), Moreno Argentin, Djamolidine Abdujaparov (3rd), Michele Dancelli ‘64/’65/’67, Maurizio Fondriest, Davide Rebellin, Daniele Bennati, Filippo Pozzato, and Giovanni Visconti (2009).

Diego who represents a new generation of Italian cycling, has just signed up to be an honorary member of The Gregarios Superclub Ciclista. We will be following his journey to emulate his famous neighbor and former world champion Paolo Bettini. When possible we hope he will be sending us occasional news and gossip from the front line. Meanwhile we wish him buona fortuna.

WINNER Coppi e Bartoli:

Diego was overall winner of the 2013 Settimana Internatzional Coppi e Bartali which finished on 24th March. This 5 day race is tough, really tough, and it’s one of the biggest events in Italian Cycling. Lampre-Merida team mate and former Giro d’Italia winner Damiano Cunago was second overall at 1 minute 35 seconds. Consistent riding and a blistering win on the hilly stage 2 sealed the deal.

Paris-Nice: 7th overall and finishing three stages in the top 7.

Bravo Diego!

Another consistent season with a win in the Gran Premio Industria e Commercio Artigianato Carnaghese, an impressive 3rd Overall in the Settinana di Coppi e Bartali which is a huge race in Italy, an impressively strong supporting ride in the World Championships, and to bookend the season a 2nd place to Alberto Contador in Milano-Torino.

Giro d’Italia stage 17:

On 25th May Diego comes of age taking his first Grand Tour win on the 230km stage 17 of the Giro d’Italia from Feltre to Tirano. The circumstances were controversial with Italian National Road Champion Giovanni Visconti pushing him aside as they raced for the line. Visconti was actually first over the finishing line at the end of the stage, but he pushed Ulissi in the final 200 metres as they sprinted for the line along with Pablo Lastras,of Spain. Race officials later demoted Visconti to third, with our man justly given the victory and Lastras second place.

Bravo Diego!

Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartali

After holding the best young rider’s jersey, Diego is now lying 2nd overall on general classification after 4 stages, with one stage to go. Consistent riding and a brilliant 4th on the hilly central Apennines 3rd stage marked his progressive leap forward to 3rd on GC, and a solid time trial on stage 4 moved him up to 2nd. Film clip Stage 5 last 5 km, Diego attacks...

Diego finished off his first ever Paris-Nice with a fantastic stage 8 ride finishing in the Cote d’Azure. Our man was in the break, and then attacked with Thomas Voeckler on the Col d’Eze.  Diego dropped back on the tricky wet descent but came in a classy second to Voeckler on the stage, and a very credible 19th overall. A brilliant debut in the big league!
